Rewi: Digital loyalty without app download friction
How we applied DCP Flow principles to design and engineer a customer retention SaaS platform for brick-and-mortar commerce.
The friction of traditional loyalty mechanisms
For restaurants, coffee shops, and specialty stores, recurring customers represent the foundation of sustainable profitability. Yet conventional retention tools carry structural flaws: paper cards do not capture data or enable post-visit communication, while native mobile apps impose high friction that most shoppers decline at the counter.
DCP's engineering objective with Rewi was to eliminate that friction: enabling an instant customer pass via mobile web and dynamic QR codes, usable in seconds without installation, while remaining capable of integrating with the merchant's point-of-sale ecosystem.
Engineering designed for counter speed and interoperability
Web-first approach without mandatory downloads
We eliminated native app requirements. The pass lives on the mobile web using accessible web standards and adaptive layout, enabling immediate counter interaction from any modern browser.
Decoupled events and POS integration
Stamp and point accrual was architected around webhooks and REST endpoints rather than altering the core POS database, enabling clean integration across diverse point-of-sale terminals.
Counter fault tolerance
In high-traffic checkout environments, transient network lag must never freeze the cash register. Validation was structured to deliver predictable responses while queuing events asynchronously.
What we engineered in Rewi
Dynamic QR pass generation
Each customer receives a unique visual pass identifier protected against basic duplicate screenshots, featuring real-time balance and tier updates.
Counter validation interface
Fast verification screen allowing counter staff to record visits or redeem rewards in a single tap on point-of-sale or mobile devices.
Merchant administration console
Management dashboard to configure reward rules (visits, points, tiers) and monitor operational visit recency and frequency.
Structured usage telemetry
Operational event logging that allows merchants to understand visit cycles without compromising sensitive customer personal information.
Real product interface captures
Verified views from the operating Rewi platform across customer, counter, and administrative workflows.

Customer digital pass
Mobile web interface where customers view accrued points, membership tier, and dynamic QR code.

Counter validation flow
Streamlined confirmation screen designed for cashier staff to validate passes with a single tap.

Merchant control console
Management console for tracking accumulated visits and configuring reward milestones.
How methodology guided Rewi's development
Rewi serves as a practical demonstration of how the 6 stages of DCP Flow are applied internally:
Direct merchant interviews revealed that over 80% of retail patrons refused to install mobile apps solely for store loyalty points.
We specified a lightweight mobile pass and modeled decoupled validation APIs to avoid POS lock-in.
Modular development in TypeScript with a relational data store and clean frontend/backend separation.
High-concurrency scan stress testing, mobile accessibility audits, and verification on entry-level hardware.
Containerization with Docker and automated deployment across Google Cloud infrastructure.
Iterative enhancements to scanner latency and administration console usability based on operational telemetry.
